Sharon Helton Hawaiian Bark Cloth & Crocheted Creations

Hawaiian bark cloth, or kapa, has a deep-rooted significance in Hawaiian culture. Traditionally made from the inner bark of the wauke tree, it was softened in water, then pounded and crafted into fabric. Kapa held a high status, often symbolizing rank and prestige, and was reserved for clothing, ceremonial use, and gifting among Hawaiian royalty.

Sharon honors this heritage through her designs at lū.lā, incorporating bark cloth into her handcrafted backpacks and pillows to bring a piece of Hawaii’s past into everyday items. Her collection also includes crocheted wristlet purses and playful Kauai chicken and rooster ornaments, each thoughtfully designed to capture a touch of island life with a blend of style, practicality, and local character.
